Your dog has loose stools, your cat has just finished a course of antibiotics, or your rabbit has a bloated little belly. In every case you think: "I'll grab a ZooLac paste" — but which of the three? Propaste, Multipaste® and Optipaste® look alike and work from the same base, but each is aimed at a slightly different situation. In this article we explain, per complaint, which variant fits best, so you don't have to guess.
The base: what do all three variants have in common?
Every ZooLac paste contains thermostabilised lactic acid bacteria. These are probiotics that survive stomach acid and therefore reach the gut alive, where they support the build-up of a healthy gut flora. This base is identical in Propaste, Multipaste® and Optipaste® — the difference lies in what has been added on top of that base, and therefore in which situation the paste is most effective.
Zoolac Propaste — the daily basic
Propaste is the most widely used product in the range and the most logical starting point. Without extra additions, this paste focuses purely on restoring and maintaining balance in the gut flora. Reach for Propaste for:
Preventive use — as ongoing support for a sensitive gut Dysbacteriosis (disrupted gut flora) without acute complaints A food switch, a move, or another stressful period After a course of antibiotics, to rebuild the gut flora Mild, temporary digestive complaints
In short: Propaste is the all-round choice for maintenance and mild complaints.
Zoolac Multipaste® — when it needs to work faster, or toxins are involved
Multipaste® contains everything in Propaste, plus two extra ingredients: zeolite (clinoptilolite), a natural clay mineral with a porous structure, and yeast cell wall fragments (with beta-glucans and MOS). This combination targets situations where more is going on than just a disrupted balance:
Loose or watery stools, when you want faster results than with Propaste alone Toxins in the gut flora — the zeolite's structure helps absorb unwanted substances in the gut Situations where the gut bacteria could use extra support from the yeast cell wall fragments
Rule of thumb: with acute, watery diarrhoea, Multipaste® is often the better first choice over Propaste.
Zoolac Optipaste® — for flatulence and a bloated belly
Optipaste® is the most extensive variant: everything in Multipaste®, plus granulated plant-based activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is known for its strong adsorbing action — it binds excess gases and unwanted substances in the gastrointestinal tract. This paste is particularly suited for:
Flatulence and a visibly bloated belly Acute intestinal complaints where fast adsorption is desired Situations where both the gut flora and the gut environment need intensive support

Quick choice: three questions
Is it preventive, or are there mild, temporary complaints? → Propaste Are the stools loose or watery, and do you want faster results? → Multipaste® Is it mainly flatulence or a bloated belly? → Optipaste®
If in doubt, or if complaints persist, last longer than 48 hours, or are accompanied by blood in the stool: always consult your vet.
Which animals are the pastes suitable for?
ZooLac® is suitable for almost all animal species — dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, birds and other pets, from puppies and kittens to seniors and foals. The paste is fully natural and cannot be overdosed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I simply switch between the three variants? Yes. Since the base (the lactic acid bacteria) is the same in all three, you can switch from day to day depending on the complaint. Some owners, for example, start with Multipaste® during acute diarrhoea and switch to Propaste for maintenance after a few days.
Is Optipaste® also suitable for preventive use? Optipaste® was primarily developed for flatulence and gas. For daily preventive use, Propaste is the more logical and targeted choice.
Do the pastes also work for horses? Yes, with an adjusted dosage due to the greater body weight. If in doubt, contact our customer service.
